Cut your toenails and hydrate yourself before you start. You also might want to pack a little bag with a fresh change of clothes, some water, and some snacks in it to leave in the car for when you get back. Always nice to have a treat waiting. Don't forget money and ID's (good anywhere you need to pay for campsites). Sometimes you will get a registration pass- you will need it! You might want to take a map and compass. Probably won't need it, but you never know what the trails will be like in there.
Hot meals at night are a real treat- backpacking meals, pasta, and boil-in-bag rice are filling and packable. The key is high carbohydrates. Summer sausage packs well for a short trip and is good for lunches, so are peanut butter sandwiches, trail mix, and beef jerky. Oatmeal for breakfast is great for cold, granola for warm weather with powdered milk- these will give you much needed carbohydrates.
